DISSOCIATION AND DISSOCIATIVE DISORDERS
Dissociation is a disruption in the normal integration of consciousness, memory, identity, emotion, perception, and behavior. When distressing and impairing, it can indicate a dissociative disorder. Interventional Psychiatry Group provides thoughtful evaluation and management for dissociative symptoms with patient-centered, trauma-informed care.
What are dissociative disorders?
According to the DSM-5-TR, dissociative disorders include Dissociative Identity Disorder,
Dissociative Amnesia, and Depersonalization/Derealization Disorder. Symptoms may include memory gaps, feeling detached from oneself or surroundings, feeling “unreal,” or experiencing different personality states.
What treatments help manage dissociative disorders?
First-line treatments include psychotherapy, often with a trauma-informed approach such as EMDR or cognitive-behavioral therapy. Medications may help manage co-occurring symptoms like depression or anxiety. At Interventional Psychiatry Group, we offer comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and medication management, and can refer to therapists with expertise in trauma and dissociation.
