PARTIAL HOSPITALIZATION PROGRAM (PHP)

What is it?

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is an intensive, structured level of care that runs 5 days per week for 6–8 hours per day. It combines multiple daily therapy groups, individual sessions, psychiatric evaluation and medication management, nursing check-ins, and coordinated family involvement. PHP helps stabilize acute symptoms quickly and builds momentum for recovery, often stepping down to Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) afterward.
Benefits

  • Rapid stabilization without an overnight hospital stay
  • Daily therapeutic structure and frequent medication review
  • Comprehensive team support (therapy, psychiatry, nursing, case management)
  • Optional family/partner involvement and thorough discharge planning

Who it’s for (typical indicators)

  • Marked functional impairment (unable to sustain school/work/home routines)
  • Recent exacerbation of depression, anxiety, OCD, trauma-related symptoms, or mood instability
  • Recent or active crisis in which daily monitoring would be helpful, such as suicidal ideation

Core elements you’ll see in phP

  • Daily group therapy blocks: CBT, DBT skills, psychoeducation, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, mindfulness skills
  • Individual therapy (1–2×/week): targets personal barriers and goals
  • Psychiatric care: evaluated upon admission; frequent follow-ups for medication optimization for those requiring services
  • Nursing check-ins: vitals/symptom monitoring and side-effect education
  • Family sessions: communication, routines, boundary-setting, and crisis planning
  • Case management: return-to-school/work planning, referrals, and community resources
  • Measurement-based care: standardized scales to track symptom change

What to expect (sample day ~5.5 hours)

  • Morning check-in & goals (30–45 min)
  • Skills block #1 (60–75 min) → break
  • Skills block #2 (60–75 min) → lunch
  • Psychoeducation/processing (60 min)
  • Wrap-up, safety plan, & home practice (20–30 min)
(Psychiatry, nursing, and individual sessions are slotted during the day.)

Length of stay & step-down

  • Typical length: 4–6 weeks, as needed to achieve stabilization and goals.
  • Planned step-down to IOP, then to weekly outpatient care, to maintain level of function.

Admissions, safety, and suitability

  • Our PHP providers will conduct a 1-hour admissions screening to determine whether PHP will be a good fit.
  • Our screening will determine the appropriate level of care; if a higher or lower level than PHP is needed, our screening provider will provide an appropriate referral.
  • If admitted, we will coordinate with your outpatient providers and share a clear aftercare plan with them at discharge.

If symptoms are interfering with your day-to-day life and you’re safe to sleep at home, PHP can help you stabilize quickly. Reach out for an intake screening. Call 901-752-4900 to schedule an evaluation, or request an evaluation online
